Critter Volume 4 Chapter 4 : Apocalypse

Apocalypse

Silver, brand new motorcycle came speeding down the highway. Not another car in sight, yet the bike was speeding in one continuous straight line as if it had somewhere to be fast. Whoever was driving was wearing a long black leather biking suit complete with a sleek black helmet that covered their entire face. The bike came to a complete stop when they reached the sign that read “Bon Temps” the person gazed down the road leading to the town, and they seemed to take a deep breath as if they were returning to some horrible place.

“Who the fuck is Curtis?” yelled Kelly “I have no idea, but I’m sick of this whole glitching thing. Mitch are you okay?” asked Lauren “I think so, nothing makes sense anymore. If he wasn’t my brother than who was he? What did he mean by plumber?” Mitch took a second to think when he raised his head to his remaining friends “guys, I think maybe it’s time for us to discuss something” he said “discuss what?” asked Kelly “the possibility of a higher power being at work here, causing these horrible things to happen, guiding us in a certain direction” he explained “I mean Dayna said that glitching was caused because the subject never existed and than Logan said he was sent here to make me fall in love? What the hell is that supposed to mean?” he yelled as he became frustrated and ran his fingers through his hair “wait” whispered Rachel as the group turned their attention to the girl who had been sobbing over Lena in the corner since they had arrived. “Curtis, I’ve heard that name before” Rachel began to search through her memories “I heard Dayna talking about him once at the bar she said she was sick of taking orders from him, she said Curtis I’m certain of it!” she yelled “that doesn’t really help!” yelled Kelly “how about you just have one of your visions and take a peak into the future or something” Kelly said pointing at Mitchell “I can’t control when I get visions, they haven’t been happening lately” he replied “maybe it’s because we don’t have much of a future left” Lauren said.

Kyle sat with a towel covering his waist on a tree stump erupting from the ground “when you say you’ve been looking for me, you mean what exactly? He asked the three strangers who for some reason knew who he was “well, this is the difficult part, we were sort of sent here to” Becky placed air quotes around her head “retrieve you” she explained “all of you”. Kyle clearly looked puzzled at the information he was given so he opened his mouth to obtain more, when he felt a sudden painful pressure coming from his chest. He looked down to see a large spear sticking through his body, blood began dripping down his chest and onto the white towel the group so gracefully offered him. Just like most things in Bon Temps, it happened so quickly. Kyle turned around to see Aaron releasing his grip from the spear “I’m really sorry about that” he said “you’re doing us a big favor” Emma added as she walked toward Kyle who had now fallen off the stump and on to his knee’s “don’t try to shift, it’s too late now” Emma added as Kyle fell to the dirt while panting up sand in his last couple of breaths “good luck” Becky whispered as she placed her food on his back and yanked out the spear. Kyle was dead and for some reason Becky, Aaron and Emma seemed pleased “on to the next one” said Emma.

“There’s a boat” said Lauren “on the peer, tied to the dock. It’s big enough to house all of us for the time being. Those things are no doubt blocking all the exits to the town, we need a quick escape and I can’t think of anything else” she added “that might just work” said Clayton as he grabbed a permanent marker from Kindred’s desk and began writing on the wall, a map. He drew a direct path to the beach, which lead directly to the boat. “Is it your boat?” asked Clayton “No, it was Warrens actually” she explained, “alright guys, let’s stay together and move quickly and quietly” directed Mitchell as he clearly had something else to say “as long as we’re in that area, can we stop at the bar quickly? I wanted to grab something before we leave this place, I may never see my bar again” he explained. The group loaded up on weapons and headed for the car “I hope Kyle made it somewhere safe” added Rachel.

The group could hear the screeching horrifying sounds of the Critter’s taking Bon Temps by storm. They were driving down an old country road approaching a path that lead to the bar. The car stayed parked on the side of the road as Mitchell ran through a small patch of woods to arrive safety and un-seen at the back entrance of the bar. “I’m coming with you” demanded Lauren, Mitchell nodded as he knew he could use the back up, who knew how many of those things were surrounding the bar. “Hurry back, and then we can finally leave this place” said Clayton as he waited at the car with Kelly and Rachel.

Mitchell and Lauren headed through the woods and came across the back door to the bar, Mitch lifted up a rock placed a few feet away from the entrance where a key was hidden underneath “nice hiding spot” said Lauren as Mitchell shot her a smirk “what did you want to get anyway?” Lauren asked as Mitchell busted through the door and ran to his office. He opened up his door and looked at the picture of all his friends and family on the opening day of Mitch’s Bar and Grill “that? You wanted a picture?” she asked with anger “no” he said as he picked up the picture and put it on the ground revealing a safe that is built into the wall hidden behind the photo, he entered the combination and popped the door open “I came for this” he said as he pulled out his Crystal Ball “we might need this” he explained.

Clayton was laying on the hood of the car with a piece of straw hanging from his mouth “these clouds are weird” he said as Rachel poked her head out of the back seat window to take a look “Clayton get in the car, we’re leaving as soon as their back” said Rachel. Just then Kelly also exited the car to stare at the clouds “no really, something’s wrong with these clouds” Clayton said again “Rachel then got out of the car to see for herself. It seemed like the clouds, along with everything else around here lately were glitching. They kept flickering in and out of the sky “what the fuck?” yelled Kelly “why is it doing that?” she asked “It makes no sense, until now I thought only people had been doing this and now the clouds too?” They looked around at their surroundings and it seemed that the tree’s and the road itself was also flickering “Clay I’m scared!” yelled Kelly “It’s alright, get in the car” he said.

They then heard some sort of vehicle speeding down the road in their direction “I haven’t seen another person in hours!” yelled Clayton “be careful, we both know that no one can be trusted” said Rachel as she stood on the opposite side of the truck. Kelly stood leaning up against the car as Clayton walked with a gun in hand toward the person approaching on a silver motorcycle. The person hit the breaks once they had reached a close distance and put their bike in neutral “can we help you?” asked Clayton a moment of silence passed through the air between Clayton and the masked biker before they pulled a long shot gun out from the right side of the bike. Clayton had but seconds to react, but the biker was too quick. They fired twice in Clayton’s direction sending him flying with blood splattering. Clayton hit the pavement dead. Kelly couldn’t even react at what had just happened to his one and only brother, she let out a scream and looked at the gunman. Kelly could see the barrel was now pointed in her direction and for a brief moment she accepted her fate “do it” she whispered as the trigger was once again pulled sending Kelly flying towards the car smashing her window. Blood splattered up the car and almost reached Rachel’s face as she was screaming for her friends. Rachel looked to see that Kelly and Clayton were dead in front of her. Rachel ducked behind the car and slowly began crawling down into the ditch to try and escape the gunman. She could hear footsteps stomping on broken glass headed in her direction. The fear of what was about to happen caused adrenaline to flow through her veins like she’s never felt before. The shooter stood behind Rachel as she crawled away, and before they pulled the trigger they turned their head in the opposite direction as if they took no pleasure in what was about to happen. The shot echoed in the forest, startling a small flock of birds out of the bushes. Rachel took a bullet to the back of the head; the shooter took one look down the path leading to the bar and began walking. Whoever it was, they were here for one thing and one thing only, to take the lives of each and every person without mercy.

Lauren and Mitchell had gotten what they came for and were leaving the bar when they saw a Critter standing outside the door they came in “on the count of three I’m going to open the door and you blast it away” said Mitch “one” they looked in each other’s eyes with the level of trust one would have when first learning to ride a bike with their parents “two” and bam. They heard a gun shot coming from outside the bar. They looked through the glass to see that someone standing in a helmet had shot the creature. The sounds would probably attract more in their direction so they had to move fast. Lauren ran out of the back door “who are you?” she asked as the gunman raised the shotgun once again and blasted Lauren right in the neck “LAUREN!” Mitchell yelled as he caught her as she was falling and fell with her “no” he cried, “Who are you, why are you doing this?” Mitchell yelled as he laid his dead friend on the ground. Mitchell stood up and prepared to blast whoever was standing in front of him away but instead, they beat him to it and fired twice into Mitchell’s chest. He could literally feel the life escaping with every breath. Mitchell began bleeding out while he was leaning up against his bar. He reached for Lauren’s hand and gripped tightly as he watched the unknown person walk towards him. Just then they took off their helmet, it was a woman with long blonde hair. Mitchell kept blinking to help make out who the person was, and when he finally saw her he just felt like giving up entirely. Ashley stood in front of Laurens dead body and Mitchell as he fought to survive. Ashley was crying heavily as she looked into Mitchell’s eyes “hi” she said. She then raised the gun to eye level, pointing the double barrel directly at the side of her head. Ashley closed her eyes and clenched her teeth, and then she pulled the trigger. Ashley’s body hit the floor. It was clear that nothing made sense so Mitchell just decided to lay face down on the ground and simply die so he closed his eyes cleared his mind and did just that.

It happened quickly this time, as if the bigger the injury the faster the cells worked to regenerate. Within a minute and a half Rachel was once again gasping for air. She rolled over, blood all in her hair and all over the ground. She stood up and realized that whoever the gunman was probably didn’t know that she could heal. Rachel saw her best friend Clayton and his little sister Kelly dead on the road, she couldn’t bare the sight. She ran down the path where she came across the helmet that the shooter was wearing. She looked over in the direction of the bar where she saw bodies. She began walking towards them and then she saw them, Lauren, Mitchell and Ashley all lying dead on the ground, Ashley was wearing the biker suit. Rachel turned her head away from the sight while wiping away tears. I was then she realized she was alone. Everyone was dead and she was stuck in Bon Temps with hundreds of those creatures surrounding the town. Rachel is the only known survivor or Bon Temps.
